Nunez wins Liga Portugal’s Player of the Year award
Darwin Nunez, the new Liverpool striker, has been voted Liga Portugal’s 2021/22 Player of the Year for his remarkable efforts for Benfica this season.
Nunez has completed a €100 million transfer to Liverpool, which may make him the club’s most expensive ever player if certain add-ons contained in the agreement are activated. Nunez rose to notoriety in the last year due to his goals for Benfica.
During the 2021/22 season, the 22-year-old Uruguayan netted 26 times in 28 Primeira Liga games, totaling 34 in 41 appearances across all competitions, including six in the Champions League.
After scoring only six league goals in his previous top flight campaign in Europe, it was a breakout season of epic proportions. Nunez had previously played for Almeria in Spain’s second division, demonstrating how quickly he has advanced.
Recent Liga Portugal award winners include Bruno Fernandes, Jonas, Nemanja Matic, Hulk, and David Luiz. Nunez is the first Benfica player to win it since Pizzi in 2016/17 as a result of Sporting CP’s recent domination.
Diego Forlan, a former Premier League forward, believes Nunez will be a success at Liverpool since he already scores goals and will learn more technical and tactical parts of the game from manager Jurgen Klopp.
“I believe that one of the things he can bring is, without a doubt, goals,” Forlan told 90min ES last month. “Then, as time goes on, he’ll keep growing on the technical aspect. He will get to know his abilities better and he will develop them more and more too, while also gaining experience.
“He’s going to a team with an amazing manager that knows football very well…how to attack the space, how to use his players and how to get the best out of them.”

He was a major member of the blue and white team this season, which resulted in the national championship triumph and the conquest of the Portuguese Cup, and he was also one of the most voted players in the competition by coaches and captains.
Taremi played 2613 minutes in the top flight, scoring 20 goals and assisting 13 times. He was also named Man of the Match in Liga Portugal five times.
