Schalke 1-1 Cologne: Visitors snatch late point

Schalke 04 missed the opportunity to go top of the German Bundesliga as they were pegged back in stoppage time to draw 1-1 at home to 17th place FC Cologne.

The Royal Blues looked like top four challengers last week when they upset RB Leipzig but failed to back that up with a disappointing result on Saturday.

David Wagner’s side created more chances and would have expected to go on to win the game when youngster Suat Serdar gave the hosts a 72nd minute lead with his third goal of the season. Each of the German under-21s goals this season have given Schalke the lead but this would be the first one they did not go on to win.

That’s because senior Germany international Jonas Hector popped up to head home an equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time.

In other results on Saturday, Bayern Munich were beaten 1-2 at home by 1899 Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund were held 2-2 at SC Freibug. Bayer 04 Leverkusen and RB Leipzig played out a 1-1 draw at the BayArena.
