Peru 0-0 Uruguay (5-4 pens): Suarez misses key spot kick

Underdogs Peru have progressed to the semi-finals of this year’s Copa America following a penalty shootout victory over Uruguay at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez missed the only penalty as the 2018 World Cup participants set up a last four match against reigning champions Chile on Wednesday. Brazil face Argentina in the other semi-final.

Suarez had seen a goal disallowed for offside in normal time. Teammate Edinson Cavani also had a goal ruled out as Uruguay failed to convert any of their 12 shots at goal.

Cavani also missed a guilt-edge opportunity during the 90 minutes, as did teammate Diego Godin from six yards out.

Peru reach the semi-finals despite not producing a single shot on target during the 120 minutes. The closest they came was when 35-year-old was denied one-on-one’s twice by last-ditch challenges from Jose Gimenez.

Three of the four quarter-finals at the 2019 Copa America went to penalty shootouts following 0-0 draws.
