Chile 0-0 Colombia (5-4 pens): Reigning champions progress to semi-finals

A second quarter-final of the 2019 Copa America went to a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw as Chile edged past Colombia on spot kicks on Friday.

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez scored the decisive penalty of a tense shootout to send reigning champions into the semi-finals.

Chile bossed the game against Colombia but failed to make a breakthrough in 120 minutes as VAR ruled out two goals.

Like Brazil 0-0 Paraguay, the game went to a penalty shootout. William Tesillo missed Colombia’s final kick prior to United’s Sanchez making no mistake. Colombia have been eliminated without conceding a single goal during their matches in Brazil.

Charles Aranguiz thought he’d given Chile the lead before VAR intervened after 16 minutes. A second-half Arturo Vidal strike was similarly chalked off after VAR spotted a handball in the build-up.

Chile will face either Uruguay or Peru next. Uruguay were 1-0 winners against Chile when these two met in their final group stage game at the start of the week.
