
Ecuador 1-2 Chile: Defending champions make it 2 wins from 2
Defending champions Chile have started with two wins from their opening two group games to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Copa America following a 2-1 win against Ecuador at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Friday.
Jose Fuenzalida had given Chile the lead inside the opening 10 minutes before Enner Valencia equalised in the 26th minute for Ecuador from the penalty spot.
Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez scored the winner six minutes into the second half, chipping home a side-footed volley.
Ecuador finished the game with 10 men after Gabriel Achilier saw red in the closing minutes.
Chile are the second team after Colombia to have qualified for the the knockout stages after two games in this year’s tournament.
Reinaldo Rueda’s side top Group C with one group game left to play, against Uruguay on Monday, while Ecuador must beat Japan on the same day to stand any chance of progressing to the final eight.
