Argentina have taken their first point from two group games at the 2019 Copa America after a second half Lionel Messi penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw against Paraguay on Wednesday.
Lionel Scaloni’s side are bottom of Group B having lost their opener 2-0 against Colombia. Victory against Qatar in their final group game on Sunday should see them through to the quarter-finals.
Richard Sanchez had given Paraguay a first half lead in the 37th minute after Argentina had dominated much of the possession and territory without really troubling Gatito Fernandez’s goal. Shortly after, Argentina goalkeeper Franco Armani was fortunate to escape with a yellow card for a last man foul on Derlis Gonzalez just outside his own penalty area. Neither side created too much after Messi’s equaliser.
Colombia’s 1-0 win over over Qatar booked their place into the quarter-finals, whilst Paraguay are on two points having drawn their opener 2-2 against Qatar. They have thrown away the lead in both games.
