Atletico Madrid 1-0 Arsenal: Wenger ends final season without a trophy

Arsene Wenger will step down as Arsenal manager without a trophy at the end of his final season at the Emirates as the Gunners won’t be playing in next season’s Champions League either.

That’s because the Premier League side were eliminated from the Europa League at the semi-final stage on Thursday night at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The La Liga side were 1-0 winners at the Wanda Metropolitano on Thursday evening With Diego Costa’s goal in first half stoppage time being enough to send Diego Simeone’s side through.

Diego Godin put in a man of the match performance at centre-back for the Spanish side, similar to his performance in North London last week when Atleti played 80 minutes with 10 men.

Atletico Madrid will face Marseille in the final in Lyon on Wednesday 16 May after the French side scored in extra-time of their second leg at Red Bull Salzburg to win 3-2 on aggregate having won 2-0 at the Stade Velodrome a week ago.
