AC Milan 0-1 Benevento: First away win for Serie A minnows

Serie A’s bottom club Benevento may have handed themselves an extra week in the Italian top flight with their first-ever win on the road, coming at the San Siro of all places.

The result means Benevento have now taken four points off AC Milan this season after their draw at home to the seven times champions of Europe back in December was their first-ever point in Serie A – in their 15th match.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side took the lead on half hour through Pietro Iemmello after 29 minutes when the striker coolly finished one-on-one past Gianluigi Donnarummain the Milan goal.

AC Milan dominated possession but didn’t greatly test the visiting goalkeeper, Christian Puggioni, despite the stats reading 21 shots and six on target for the hosts.

Benevento had a nervy finish after substitute Cheick Diabaté saw red for an elbow with 10 minutes remaining.  However, they held on to prevent relegation for at least another day.  The Serie A minnows would be relegated if Crotone beat Udinese on Sunday.

The result leaves AC Milan in sixth, 10 points outside the top four and with only four games to play.  Benevento have collected just 17 from their 34 games in what is their first-ever season in the Italian top flight.
