Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Barcelona 10 points from title

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played out a 1-1 draw in the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday.

The result sees Diego Simeone’s side maintain their four point lead over their city rivals but 11 behind runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his 10th consecutive Real Madrid goal when he volleyed home Gareth Bale’s cross in the 53rd minute.  Marco Asensio and Marcelo had both hit the crossbar earlier in the game.

Real Madrid’s lead only lasted four minutes as Antoine Griezmann scored on a rebound following Vitolo’s shot that was parried by Keylor Navas.

Ronaldo was surprisingly replaced at 1-1 with 26 minutes remaining but perhaps Zinedine Zidane had Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Juventus in mind, despite leading 3-0 from the first leg in Italy last week.

Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored a staggering 20 goals in his last 10 games for Real Madrid and 40 in 37 matches in all competitions this season for the Spanish giants, despite a slow start to the campaign.

With seven games left to play of the 2017-18 La Liga season, Barcelona need just 10 points from their remaining fixtures to regain the title.  Ernesto Valverde’s side are unbeaten in their 31 league games this season.
